Review: The Winter Harvest Handbook: Year Round Vegetable Production Using Deep Organic Techniques and Unheated Greenhouses
Review: The Winter Harvest Handbook: Year Round Vegetable Production Using Deep Organic Techniques and Unheated Greenhouses |
Posted: The Winter Harvest Handbook: Year Round Vegetable Production Using Deep Organic Techniques and Unheated Greenhouses (Paperback) By Eliot Coleman I agree with jyoung's review that there are great stories and history lessons in the book of how winter gardening works and how it worked for the French & British in the 1800's. The whole last 1/3rd of the book is about marketing and packaging produce for a business, so not very applicable for me as a home gardener. I also find his stories and techinques difficult to apply on a smaller scale for my home garden. I feel the book lacks actual how-to information, it is just some stories on what he has tried over the years and what he grows to sell to his customer base. Living at almost 11,000 feet in Colorado, I was really hoping for some good information on winter gardening since we have around 7-8 months of snow/year including receiving snow sometimes around (or after) July 4th. Though the book was an interesting read and a good history lesson, it was not quite the technical how-to guide I was looking for. |

Review: How To Start A Worm Farm
Review: How To Start A Worm Farm |
Posted: The author does indeed cover many aspects of starting a worm farm: beginning in one's kitchen and even expanding vermicomposting into a job. That being said, I am skeptical about some of the advice given. The author doesn't seem to mention brown-green ratio (unless I missed it when skimming), and even suggests giving the worms some meat! The book would be more convincing if it was proofread: "For the bedding you will surely WANT TO SHOULD tear the newspaper" (location 62), "If you DO DON'T desire to do that" (63), "If you are able to pay a visit to an art gallery, you will certainly find a worm farm" (112! Maybe the author meant a science museum?). The cover photo was attractive, but does the author really believe that a caterpillar is a type of earthworm? These errors add to my skepticism. My suggestions to improve this book: Adding some simple measurements, diagrams or photos (but no caterpillars, please!;-) would make this book more useful. How about also telling readers where they can find or buy worms to start their farm with? |

Review: This Organic Life: Confessions of a Suburban Homesteader
Review: This Organic Life: Confessions of a Suburban Homesteader |
This Organic Life: Confessions of a Suburban Homesteader Posted: From the Washington Post: Books Show Organic Gardens Can Be of Beauty and Service By Joel M. Lerner Saturday, June 16, 2001; Page H07 ...(G)et a copy of "This Organic Life: Confessions of a Suburban Homesteader" by Joan Dye Gussow (Chelsea Green...). You will forget that education is the purpose of this book, because it moves so much like a novel. However, you will find yourself stopping and jotting down little bits of information and recipes along the way. This informative text is about the author's trials and tribulations, a story of self-sufficiency and living off the land. It is so well written, poignant and packed with facts that every page is enjoyable and educational reading. You will go through floods and feasts, good times and bad, and come out the other end an extremely well-informed organic gardener, but you get there almost subliminally as you enjoy this 273-page hardcover account. |
